If you want a book that will absolutely rip your heart out through a Chinese folk retelling of Cinderella (which if you know the involves a fairy godmother of sorts in the form of a fish)! Let me just start by saying the writing of this was absolutely beautiful. Eventhough the story mad me sad at times I couldn’t put it down. The way Elizabeth captures the relationships between mothers and daughters resonated deeply with me. I love the interwoven chapters we get of the story told thought Yut Ying’s perspective then and now and also in later years her daughter Marigold. I was told this would give my Joy Luck Club vibes which is one of my absolute favourite movies of all time and this absolutely delivers! I love how the shimmer of magic was weaved into this beautiful story which at its heart is about what it means to be truly seen as a woman.. Not just as a mother, a daughter or an immigrant but as a person. This is one that will stay with me forever.💖 🐟 Chinese folklore 🥮 Multi-generational trauma 🐟 the immigrant experience 🥮 magical realism 🐟 family curses 🥮 Cinderella retelling
