Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is a thrilling critical examination of the consequences of deceptive ingenuity and the callous disregard of the laws of hospitality. It’s my favorite screenplay that Nolan has written, filled with haunting treatises on war, sacrifice, succession, societal collapse, and more. “Tell her I’m sorry for the things done in my name.” “Back into your disguises.” So many lines in this film will forever be iconic. Nolan hasn’t just adapted Emily Wilson’s adaptation; he has composed his own essential translation of the poem we attribute to Homer by bringing it back to its oral roots and deepened it with historical context. It’s just a really cool idea for how to do an Odyssey movie. Some of Nolan’s commitment to practical effects results in muddled execution, but in most cases, it’s horrifyingly vivid. Echoes of every Nolan film appear, down to the most subtle Interstellar tesseract bookcase created with a simple lighting effect that I absolutely loved. It’s the most symphonically sophisticated Nolan film as well. Career-defining performances by Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Samantha Morton, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, and Robert Pattinson. I can’t wait to see it again.
