The ocean is home to some of the most extraordinary biodiversity on Earth. But much of what happens at sea remains invisible. This lack of transparency has real consequences. Today, about 75% of industrial fishing vessels are not publicly tracked, making it harder to protect marine ecosystems, support coastal communities and prevent illegal fishing. Global Fishing Watch, which my organization helped launch by providing its initial funding, is a free tool used to map all industrial activities at sea, bringing greater transparency to our ocean and helping shine a light on the activity happening beyond the horizon.
