Closing our 10th Anniversary season, we present Solace & Solidarity. Duruflé's moving Requiem is a feature on the program. Maurice Duruflé Requiem is a meditation on peace, built almost entirely upon the ancient foundations of Gregorian chant. By weaving medieval melodies into a rich tapestry of fluid rhythm and post-impressionist style harmonies, the work avoids the traditional rigidity of a Requiem in favor of a weightless, soaring quality. Duruflé presents a sense of "eternal rest" rather than dramatic conflict or despair. An organist himself, he composes an organ part that is both technically virtuosic and atmospheric to support the choral lines.
