It has served as both a royal residence and a military stronghold and a prison for Mary, Queen of Scots, who was imprisoned here from June 1567 until her escape in May 1568. @smotherday Thank you so much for sharing your travels. Those are places that I will never have the opportunity to see in person and I greatly appreciate seeing them through your posts. Can you imagine what it would be like to actually walk through those buildings when they were functioning? Someone had to actually design those and build them. Why did they put those doors there? Why were the windows where they are? We never know the reasons behind those decisions. Again thank you so much for sharing all of your adventures.
@davep1954 Have you visited Castle Bolton in North Yorkshire? That was another of Mary's prisons, a bit more comfortable than Loch Leven. She had a large retinue of servants there. Her final prison, Fotheringay, no longer exists.
