Braden Moran@bradenmoran I’ve been documenting the annual Central Valley pistachio harvest with Espericueta Farms for the last eight years, and it never stops humbling me. Harvest time is relentless work. The crews are often up by 2:30 a.m., racing to get work done before the stifling heat sets in, pushing through dust and fatigue, tackling whatever breaks down or goes wrong that day. There’s always something… Farming is never predictable - weather, markets, machines, all of it stacked against them. Yet they just keep showing up. Day after day. Season after season. They carry the weight of uncertainty with every step of the process, and still, they work with grit, resilience, and often even a smile. Watching it unfold year after year changes the way I see food. It reminds me that every bag, every bin, every bite on the table is hard earned. It is (quite literally) the fruit of immense labor. The result of a vast community of international people tied together with a common purpose. Maybe we can all carry more of that supportive, community based mentality into our daily lives in their honor…it’s the least we can do for all they do for us.
