CAMPUS—For many first-year students, Level B’s Fishbowl Wednesday represents less of a drink special and more of a cultural marker: a moment when the anonymity of campus life narrows into a crowd of strangers bound by plastic straws. Survey results show that freshmen still believe it to be a setting for chance encounters, with nearly 70% saying they expect to leave the night with “a new connection.” “I’ve been coming here every Wednesday for three weeks,” said freshman hotelie Maddie Rodriguez. “I’ve already run through half my options. Sophomore Marcus Williams, now an experienced fishbowler, has wisdom to bestow upon the incoming freshmen. “Call it a party if you want,” Williams noted, “but you’re really just participating in an elaborate social experiment—house music, nervous freshmen drinking for the first time, all crammed together—so the odds of something happening are high.
