About Nationaldanceday
American Dance Movement established National Dance Day in 2010 with co-founder Nigel Lythgoe and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton to promote dance as exercise and artistic expression. The holiday takes place annually on the third Saturday in September, falling on September 19 in 2026. It encourages Americans of all ages to celebrate movement and health through dance.
The day was originally held in July before moving to September in 2019 to align with the academic year and school partnerships. Events include free classes, flash mobs, and community performances nationwide. National Dance Day emphasizes dance’s benefits for cardiovascular health, flexibility, and mental wellbeing while fostering inclusivity across all dance styles.
