About Meteorologist
National Weather Service meteorologist studies the atmosphere to understand and forecast weather and atmospheric phenomena. The word comes from the Greek term for things occurring high in the sky, and modern meteorologists use scientific principles and data to predict weather events rather than relying on a crystal ball. They act like weather detectives, analyzing patterns across the country and world to make accurate forecasts.
A meteorologist’s role goes beyond daily weather reports. They conduct scientific research on climate, natural disasters like tornadoes and hurricanes, and sometimes work in transportation safety or with architects on building design. Many hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in meteorology, as defined by the American Meteorological Society. Meteorologists also communicate risks to the public during severe weather.
