Converse removed a Chuck 70 X sneaker ad in September 2026 after critics said it evoked Ku Klux Klan and lynching imagery. The Instagram photo showed K-pop singer Karina of aespa wearing a white skirt while holding black sneakers, with lighting that some viewers said resembled a KKK hood and dangling shoes. The company apologized, stating it recognized why the image was deeply upsetting and that it should not have happened, and said it was working to take the ad down from all channels.
The campaign was part of a collaboration with Karina promoting the Chuck 70 X sneakers, launched internationally on August 27, 2026. Converse, owned by Nike, declined to provide further details on how the ad was approved before posting. The controversy drew additional attention to a separate Converse image of sneakers hanging from a tree branch that some also linked to lynching imagery.
Civil rights attorney Lee Merritt and commentators including Don Lemon criticized the company’s review process, arguing that such imagery should have been caught before publication. The incident was compared to other recent brand controversies, including Target pulling a children’s Halloween costume criticized as racially insensitive.
